About Morgan State University
Morgan State University is a historically black college, located in Baltimore, which is an independent city and the largest cultural center of the US stat of Maryland, along the tidal portion of the Patapsco River, with a population of more than 637 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2009 census. The Baltimore Metropolitan Area has approximately 2.7 million people living within its limits, fact which makes it the 20th largest one in the country.
Morgan State University had its name changed several times, since it was founded, being known under the name of Centenary Biblical Institute, between 1867 and 1890, Morgan College, between 1890 and 1938, and Morgan State College, between 1938 and 1975, adopting its current name in 1975, being granted with the university status. Today, the university has approximately 6000 undergraduate and more than 600 graduate students, about 35% being from outside the state, including numerous students from foreign countries.
Morgan State offers various education programs in numerous fields of study, through 9 colleges, schools and institutes, among which there are: College of Liberal Arts, School of Business and Management, School of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences and Estuarine Research Center, The College of Liberal Arts being the university’s largest academic division, which offers 12 undergraduate degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree, including in English, Fine Art, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Telecommunications.
The athletic teams from Morgan State are known as the Morgan State Bears, who compete in the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), in various sports, being perhaps best known in football, lacrosse and basketball, more than one 3rd of the university’s football players having played in the NFL, and many of its track athletes having competed internationally and having received world-class status. More than 200 male and female Morgan State athletes have been included into the university’s Hall of Fame, including National Football League Hall of Famer Leroy Kelly and the coach of the legendary Ten Bears lacrosse team Howard `Chip` Silverman.

Alexander - Judge, District Court of Maryland for Baltimore County, William E.
